If you enjoy your daily cup of coffee, it is worth noting that this is a critical time for coffee farmers: harvest season is beginning in the tropics. In light of this, Amazonia Impact Ventures (AIV) has approved a new loan plan for one of our partners in the Amazon region, the Sanchirio Palomar Cooperative.
The cooperative was created in 2020 by only 25 producers, growing exponentially to what it is today: a collective of 540 farmers who live and work in Pichanaki, in the region of Junín, an important area in Central Peru.
Our newest working capital impact finance of USD 350K will directly benefit the lives of the farmers, including more than 176 women, who can sell their coffee produce at a fair price and improve their livelihoods.
Last year, with our first loan of USD 250K, Sanchirio gained access to international markets, exporting coffee with 100% traceability to the United States and Europe. They entered a tripartite contract involving AIV and the buyer Interamerican Coffee.
This commercial contract, arranged by AIV, proved helpful in navigating the highly volatile prices the coffee supply chain suffers in the international finance market.
ADVANCING ENVIRONMENT RESPONSIBILITY
In our reinvestment report, Sanchirio Palomar is committed to meet the environmental targets below:
- Distribute and plant 200 forest seedlings per producer;
- Transform coffee pulp and animal waste into compost;
- Use renewable energy by implementing solar panels in 50 farms.
All of Sanchirio’s farms have georeferencing in compliance with EUDR regulations, receiving technical assistance and training for the management of agroforestry systems. Most members hold organic and fair-trade certifications, and they are expected to obtain Naturland certification by the end of 2025.
SITE VISIT
On a recent trip to Pichanaki, our co-founders, Aldo Soto and Pajani Singah, and our Investment Officer, Nelson Torres, witnessed the organisation’s daily operations and surveyed the social and environmental impact.
“Some cooperatives were strongly affected by coffee price fluctuations, but Sanchirio is growing consistently thanks to strong management and ambitious environmental targets,” commented Pajani Singah.
