Together We Thrive: La Campiña, Peru

5th November 2024

Today our mini-series Together We Thrive highlights one of our Peruvian partners, La Campiña. This company produces organic ginger, turmeric and cacao and operates two processing plants in the province of Satipo, a city located in the region of Junín, central part of Peru.

Founded in 2013, La Campiña unites 100 organic-certified producers collecting, processing and selling their production both nationally and internationally for over a decade.

Considered a medium enterprise, La Campiña began its partnership with Amazonia Impact Ventures (AIV) in 2022, after being recognised as a biodiversity-friendly company by the Bioinvest Program of the Ministry of Environment of Peru. This program was implemented by the German Technical Cooperation (GIZ), granting them access to technical assistance and then financing by AIV.

Due to its responsible environmental management, La Campiña received its first impact-linked loan of USD 200 thousand in 2023 and, this year has renewed the commitment with AIV with an additional USD 250 thousand in financing.

Our investment will support them in the export to European countries, particularly Italy and the Netherlands, allowing diversification into other products such as cacao, coffee, and ginger derivatives like powder and juice.

According to the business manager Grober Galindo, there is a crescent interest from North American partners to take advantage of a commercial relationship with La Campiña: “The plan is to send 30 and 40 containers of fresh organic ginger to the USA, taking advantage of the opportunities offered by US consumers, who are increasingly interested in healthy and sustainable products", added Grober.

Since its launch, the company has maintained a value proposition strongly linked to environmental protection. This unique selling point differentiates La Campiña from its competitors as ginger and turmeric plantations are often associated with deforestation.

The challenge of sustainably cultivating these roots in the Amazon Forest has earned them various certifications. Not only is all their produce organic and fairtrade, but La Campiña also holds the Demeter certification, which identifies agricultural products according to the principles of biodynamic agriculture. This certification is only awarded to farmers who nourish their soil, protect the planet, and produce nutrient-dense food.

Among the commitments between Amazonia Impact Ventures (AIV) and La Campiña are:

- working with small producers in the ginger and cocoa supply chain;

- improving agricultural practices through technical assistance;

- implementing dynamic agroforestry systems;

- implementing a deforestation alert system to reduce deforestation at the farm level.

We are proud to partner with people, organisations and companies who are dedicated to protecting the most important forest we have on the planet: the Amazon. We will continue to seek out and collaborate with forest people committed to this vital cause.
