World Wildlife Day is a reminder that the Amazon is not only a global biodiversity stronghold, but a strategic economic asset that remains profoundly undervalued. The region holds 10% of the planet’s known species.
This ecological wealth is under pressure. Wildlife populations are declining as deforestation and degradation continue to erode habitats, weakening the very systems that underpin climate stability and local economies.
The IDB’s recent study, “Amazonia: A Journey Toward Prosperity & Resilience”, captures this reality through the region’s central trilemma:
Economic growth,
Environmental protection,
and improved livelihoods.
These must advance together, although historically they had been treated as competing priorities. The economic context reinforces this point. Despite its importance, the Amazon remains structurally undercapitalised. It spans 40% of South America, supports 47 million people, but contributes only marginally to national GDPs. Poverty rates average 37%, and many communities lack access to basic infrastructure, finance and diversified markets.
This is where investment becomes decisive. At Amazonia Impact Ventures (AIV), we see the Amazon not only as a global ecological asset but as one of the most undervalued impact investment opportunities of our time. Our work focuses on enterprises operating at the intersection of:
Bioeconomy and regenerative production;
Indigenous and local‑led business models;
Climate, biodiversity, and inclusive growth.
We invest in organisations that protect standing forests, strengthen local economies, and build resilient value chains rooted in nature‑positive production. This is a long‑term, patient investment thesis aligned mankind's future with global capital.
