Amazonia Impact Ventures (AIV) has made the first investment in Brazil through partner Ecotierra, which is developing a carbon project in Roraima with Courageous Land. This initiative marks a milestone for AIV in the Brazilian Amazon, home to the largest share of the forest, the planet’s most vital carbon sink and biodiversity reservoir.
For AIV, this capital reflects a long‑term commitment to building community‑centred forest economies. By financing Ecotierra’s entry into the project, AIV is catalysing a collaboration that shows how livelihoods and climate resilience can advance together in the Amazon.
“We are thrilled to be involved with operations in Brazil and investing in a project that will bring positive results to the forest conservation and the livelihoods of communities in the Global South,” explained AIV’s Investment Director and Co-founder, Pajani Singah.
As Ecotierra’s Director Etienne Desmarais detailed, this project is about more than carbon credits; it is about “empowering communities to restore landscapes, generate income, and prepare for climate change with resilient agroforestry systems.”
Through AIV’s investment, Ecotierra brings recognised expertise in carbon finance, verification, and project structuring.
The Roraima Carbon project builds on a pioneering agroforestry model that replaces carbon‑emitting agriculture with multi‑strata systems designed to capture carbon, regenerate soils, and produce organic crops such as cocoa, coffee, açaí, and Brazil nuts. This approach sequesters more carbon per hectare than conventional agriculture and creates diversified income streams for local communities.
According to Courageous Land CEO Philip Kauders, the organisation has already expanded life‑changing opportunities for local communities, and this new investment will contribute to the initial 2,000 hectare goal.
“The support from AIV and Ecotierra strengthens our commitment to delivering a positive impact on the ground,” he said.
Courageous Land recently secured B‑Corp accreditation and began its journey in 2021 with an investment from Fundo Vale, one of Brazil’s leading supporters of forest‑positive enterprises.
IMPACT GOALS
We will see an expansion of biodiverse agroforestry systems implemented within a 116 hectares sustainably managed farm, planting thousands of native shade trees and economic-focused crops.
A tree nursery with an annual capacity of 500,000 seedlings will be prepared, laying the groundwork to scale the project to 2,000 hectares of agroforestry, 2 million trees planted, and 2,000 hectares of native forest conserved.
LONG-TERM VISION
Projected Impact Numbers by the end of Roraima Carbon Project:
US$58 million in income for local families by 2035
800 direct and indirect green jobs
3M carbon credits by 2050
Restoration of Amazonian corridors with native agroforestry
Inclusion of women and Venezuelan refugee groups in project activities
Water retention, revitalised soil health, increased biodiversity, and supply of organic food, ingredients, and medicine to global markets.
Carbon projects are reshaping the way conservation is financed in the Amazon. By turning avoided deforestation into measurable climate benefits, initiatives like the Roraima Carbon Projects open new pathways for communities to protect forests while securing livelihoods. The plan in Rorainópolis, Roraima, is designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and increase carbon sequestration.
Beyond carbon, the project contributes to consolidating a biodiversity corridor that links critical ecosystems in northern Brazil. It protects habitats for endemic species, supports Indigenous stewardship, and advances several Sustainable Development Goals, including climate action, life on land, and sustainable communities. While carbon projects are technically complex, requiring rigorous standards, transparent monitoring and long‑term governance, the opportunity can scale across regions, bringing more communities into conservation finance and creating resilient forest economies.
