Known locally as “white cacao”, Copoazú (Theobroma grandiflorum, known in Brazil as cupuaçu) is native to the Amazon Basin and belongs to the same family as cacao. The flavour is one of the fruit’s greatest assets: a fragrant blend of chocolate, pineapple, pear and banana, with a creamy pulp that has become a favourite in fine pastry, natural beverages and functional foods. The seeds yield a rich butter increasingly used in premium skincare.

Peru has no reliable figures on how much copoazú it grows. At the Copoazú Roundtable in Madre de Dios, AIV presented a mapping, funded by UK PACT, that will measure production and the barriers farmers face, and keep the data in Peru.

Global AgInvesting Europe opened in London yesterday, bringing institutional investors and agribusiness leaders together at the Rosewood. AIV co-founder and investment director Pajani Singah told a panel on ESG investing in agriculture that impact finance still isn’t reaching the value chains AIV works in, and called on ethical buyers to commit to offtake guarantees.

The bioeconomy is moving up the global agenda, and investors are paying closer attention. But the money isn’t reaching the forest at scale. Amazonia Impact Ventures is bringing its Amazon bioeconomy work into the classroom. This November, Co-Founder and Investment Director Pajani Singah joins the University of St. Gallen's "Designing Capital for Impact" programme, breaking down how impact-linked loans get structured and repaid across Amazonian producers and value chains. Applications close 31 October.

Only 12 of 141 Pan-Amazon financing mechanisms are built exclusively for sociobiodiversity value chains. Amazonia Impact Fund I is one of them. AIV has approved a new impact-linked loan for La Campiña, an organic ginger and cacao exporter in Río Negro, Satipo. But the real story is what's happened since 2023: the company's ESG score has nearly doubled, its environmental score has more than doubled, and it now works with over 100 ginger and 330 cacao farming families across Satipo and Chanchamayo, protecting them from the price volatility that's hit the wider cacao market.

A new study mapped 141 financing mechanisms across the Amazon and found the same pattern throughout: the capital exists, but it rarely reaches the people on the ground.
