The future of the Amazon forest will be shaped not only by conservation policy, but by whether we can build, and finance, a viable economic alternative to forest degradation.
That's the question Pajani Singah, Co-Founder and Investment Director of Amazonia Impact Ventures (AIV), is taking to Building Bridges again this year. Geneva's sustainable finance week runs from 6 to 8 October at the Centre International de Conférences Genève.
The overall gap is well documented. The Asset Management Association Switzerland (AMAS), a founding partner of the event, cites international estimates of around USD 4 trillion a year needed to meet climate and sustainable development goals. AMAS adds that public budgets won't cover it alone.
Food systems sit where the climate, biodiversity and poverty crises meet, yet farmers receive only a small fraction of climate finance, Tania Karas reported for Devex in July. That's despite an estimated USD 14 billion in private investment going to nature last year.
Pajani will be at the sessions where those numbers get specific. On the evening of Tuesday 6 October, a panel looks at how to unlock investment for nature in Amazonia, including how concessional public funding can bring in private capital. The session is organised by Conservation International, the Fonds français pour l'environnement mondial (FFEM) and the Institut de la Finance Durable.
Pajani will also follow discussions on the transition to a bioeconomy, hosted by NatureFinance, and on financing resilient landscapes with WWF. The list also includes a session with iGravity on results-based finance for emerging-market ecosystems, and one on catalytic capital for climate-resilient agricultural value chains.
If you're in Geneva and want to talk about investing in the Amazon bioeconomy, get in touch.
