A meeting in Manaus, capital city of Brazil’s Amazon, brought Amazonia Impact Ventures (AIV) into closer dialogue with the Fundação Amazônia Sustentável (FAS), one of the leading institutions working at the intersection of conservation and community‑led development.

Our Co‑Founder and Investment Director, Pajani Singah, has been in the city for the YPO Global Impact Summit 2026, using the visit to strengthen relationships and expand our partnerships across Brazil.

His discussion with FAS founder and chief executive, Virgilio Viana, focused on investment opportunities that advance bioeconomy models grounded in community leadership and forest protection. Supported over many years by KfW and the UK Government, FAS has built a reputation for combining scientific rigour with deep local engagement.

Among its most recognised initiatives is the sustainable management of “pirarucu”, a keystone freshwater species whose presence reflects the health of Amazonian floodplain ecosystems. The programme stands out for its scale, governance and measurable impact:

  • restoring fish populations,

  • increasing household income

  • and reinforcing the role of traditional knowledge in managing freshwater systems.

FAS strengthens this model through technical support, infrastructure and market access, while investments in pre‑processing facilities, cold‑chain improvements and digital traceability have enhanced transparency and reinforced the value chain.

The approach demonstrates how community‑driven conservation can deliver ecological recovery and economic resilience across the Amazon. Just as a curiosity, Pirarucu is consumed in local communities all over the region, and is now largely served in high-end restaurants in Lima, where it is known as “Paiche”.
